Chapter 6 Reflection
In Chapter 6 of Essentials for Social Media Marketing, we learned about Twitter and how it works. I have never used Twitter before – I always found it too intimidating. However, now looking at the set-up of Twitter – it does not seem all that different from the other forms of social media that I am familiar with.
Looking at the formatting of Twitter and the Components of a Twitter Post section, I find that I am thinking about the similarities between many social media platforms as they take ideas and details from one another and build them into their own platforms. For example, I always thought that Twitter was only a site for sharing short, text-based posts. Now, reading through the chapter, I have learned that you can add videos and pictures to a Twitter post. Facebook and Instagram have very similar platforms now, with Stories, Direct Messaging, and, Posting Photos/Videos. I guess the similarities between Facebook and Instagram especially make sense because they are now owned by the same people. However, other forms of social media are changing and adapting. I wonder if in the far (or near) future, many social media platforms will be the same style of formatting. Maybe more social media platforms will end up merging together – like Facebook and Instagram.
Also, when reading the Looking Ahead section of Chapter 6, I get a similar feeling that Twitter is utilizing some ideas from other social media sites as they continue to update their own. It said that they want to update their video-sharing technology, which is something the Facebook and Instagram have both done recently – with IGTV and the Facebook Watch tab becoming prevalent on their respective sites. I find it interesting how many similarities there are between social media sites that I was initially intimidated by or uninformed about.
Emily, I liked you how mentioned how Twitter has many similar features to Instagram and Facebook. I agree with you 100% and I thought is was interesting that Twitter is becoming more oriented with videos just like Instagram and Facebook. When I read the chapter I almost thought Twitter was copying features from other platforms, however when thinking about the media all platforms do pretty much the same thing. It was smart to say that Twitter utilize ideas from other platforms instead of copy. Anyway, I'm glad this chapter helped you understand Twitter better and I hope to see you on the platform!
