Chapter 3 Reflection

Reading through Chapter 3 in Essentials of Social Media Marketing, I cannot help but compare the tasks of a social media manager for an organization to the tasks I am experiencing now as a stage manager. There is so much work and “following” that goes into each job, which I am learning firsthand. For example, in Section 3 of Chapter 2, there is a long list of elements that need to be plotted out in a spreadsheet in order to continue making decisions and monitor the company’s social media presence. As a stage manager, I must do similar things in the rehearsal room, rather than online.

A social media manager is expected to gather information on “the social media networks the company is active on,” “whether or not the social media profiles are fully optimized,” and, “examples of great posts and content that is working well,” along with many other parts. As a stage manager, I am expected to gather information on blocking, technical aspects that need to be adjusted (i.e., props, set pieces, costume pieces, etc.), cast concerns, and much more. These two positions may not be connected in the content that they address and focus on, but the processes that they go about doing their work is very similar. I often make spreadsheets, as well as calendars, distribution plans, and goals – other pieces that are discussed in Chapter 3 for social media managers. A social media manager’s calendar will look like a schedule for postings and content being sent out online, My calendar is a list of every rehearsal and what they consist of (start and end time, what will be reviewed). A social media manager’s distribution plans will involve looking at what content suits which audiences best and using that to their advantage when distributing their materials. My distribution plan is much simpler; however, I do have lists set up in my Gmail to send emails to separate parts of the Beauty and the Beast team.

Learning about the similarities between social media managing and stage managing has been very eye-opening. I am excited to find more similarities as we continue to learn about social media and what managing social media for an organization entails. 🎭

  1. Hey Emily great blog! I am currently a business management and being a manager takes an exceptional effort of organizing and making sure everything is done right. Tying this in with social media, there has to be organization and good layouts when developing a social media platform. The social media manger has to know the right content to put out for their company so that way people will be more engaged and involved with whats being put out there.
