Chapter 2 Reflection
I am an Arts Administration minor and there were so many connections to what I have learned in these classes to Part One of Chapter 2. Last semester, in my Intro to Arts Administration course, I learned a lot about how to create and run a non-profit organization. These companies use terms like “vision” and “purpose”, similarly to the way the book defines the ways we discover our personal brand. The definitions in my class were the same for these terms as those stated in Chapter 2. A “vision” is where you want to see yourself in the future, while a “purpose” is the steps you take to achieve that goal. I was able to make that happen for the non-profit business I worked on last semester, and I am interested to see how that applies to myself. I would like to explore what my personal vision and purpose are and reflect on them here.
When I look to the future in five to ten years, I am not sure what that will look. There are so many options spinning around in my mind. I know for certain that I want to be involved in the arts. My biggest personal vision is one of me working as a performer and making connections with many audiences and people. However, there are futures that I can see very clearly where I am working as a marketing manager for a theatre. The possibilities for me in my field are endless and it is hard to envision myself only having one, set-in-stone future path. I know a big part of my purpose is going to college for Musical Theatre and taking opportunities while they are available – which is what I am doing now. My draft personal purpose statement might sound like, “To gain experience and make relationships with others that will help for future success in the arts.” 🎭
It is so exciting to see you open to so many different paths, especially when our field is so rigorous. Especially with the past year being so unknown in the arts, it’s hard to pin point exactly what we might be doing in the next few years. Luckily we have all these new skills and classes to help us in other fields, or ours! I also made the same connections to our introduction class, and it’s fun to see how the non profit we made could work with a stronger social media presence.
