Chapter 9 Reflection

My first experience with LinkedIn was in 9th grade – when I kept getting email invites to join and connect with an old dance teacher. Back then, my mom told me not to worry about it and I haven’t thought about LinkedIn since – until this class! I didn’t even really know what LinkedIn was, other than I thought it was a place to connect with people professionally. I didn’t know there were marketing aspects to it or that it was considered a form of social media.

By reading Chapter 9 in “Essentials for Social Media Marketing”, I learned that you can make posts with text, a call-to-action link, images, videos and, polls. There are also LinkedIn Stories, which are very similar to the Stories embedded in Facebook and Instagram. LinkedIn even has a livestreaming component on their site. As I continued to read the chapter, LinkedIn reminded me more and more of other social media sites that I use regularly (Facebook and Instagram).

Something interesting that I read in this chapter was the 4-1 rule. It says that for every self-serving piece of content you share, you should post 4 about or written by other people. This is similar to the suggestion for Instagram! The textbook suggests marketing on Instagram with 20% promotional content and 80% other. LinkedIn suggests 20% personal content and 80% other. It is really cool to find the little similarities between each social media site and how similar they are to each other. They may have all started in different formats with different founding ideas, however, many social media formats have become more similar as they share elements with each other and fit the society of today. 😊
