Weekend Prep for Beauty and the Beast!
This weekend is the last preparations before the beginning of Beauty and the Beast rehearsals on Monday, August 30. I am the stage manager for B&B, which means that I coordinate rehearsals, email the cast with updates, and basically make sure the entire process and then the shows run smoothly. I have had some training on Zoom this summer, but it is my first time being involved in stage management, so I am a little nervous. Today was the first day of taping down the rehearsal rooms – the intention behind this is to have a to-scale version of the set taped down onto the floor so that when we space the scenes, we know how much room is available on the stage. I am so grateful that I have four assistant stage managers to help me with many of the daunting tasks that come along with my position. Today was relatively productive, as we finished almost 90% of the taping in our main rehearsal room. I am glad that we have a plan for the next few days on what needs to get done and when.
I am really learning a lot about myself as we start this process, and I am very excited to see how I will grow and change as the weeks go on. I have never had this kind of position in the arts before. I have been dancing on stage since I was 3 years old and acting since age 10. I was a choreographer for three years in high school. None of these have required the sheer amount of work that I am doing now and will continue to be doing for the next 5 weeks. I have so much respect for the stage managers and other technical designers I have worked with in the past. It is hard to understand the amount of work that they put in when you have only been a performer, since they are so different. I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity to learn more about me, different parts of my field of study, and the people who work with me in the arts. ðŸŽ
Hi Emily! I am so happy that you get to be a stage manager this year. Sounds like your hands with be filled but you will definitely kill it ! I absolutely love anything in the arts, in fact I use to dance myself. Its been awhile but you said you were a choreographer in high school, you might have to show me some new moves! It's great that not only you know what its like on stage performing but you also will have experience behind the curtain. I am excited to hear more about your adventures as a stage manager. I wish you the best of luck!
